One of the last bastions of old money conservatism, the San Francisco Golf Club has not succumbed to the riches of Silicon Valley and other technology instant millionaires. Money can’t buy you love…..or a tee time at San Francisco Golf Club.
Rated #27 of the world’s top 100 golf courses, San Francisco Golf Club has a demanding; yet exceptionally beautiful course. The course is in excellent condition and well maintained. Mature trees will play heavily on your score on a few holes. Along with the stunning scenery, there are challenging elevation changes.
The courses signature hole is #7; a 189 yard par-3 downhill to a two-tiered green. The final “legal” duel in California was fought on the site of #7’s green where Senator David Broderick lost to California Supreme Court Justice David Terry in 1859.
San Francisco Golf Club is beyond elite with admission policies that require you to make a reservation just to fill out an admissions application. There is a story at the course where a member’s wife applied for membership and was turned down. Even an insider does not wield the power of membership. If you ever get the privilege to play this course, be sure and listen to your caddie.
