Located in Hercules; a small city at the southeast shore of the
San Pablo Bay; Franklin Canyon Golf Course is nestled among the beauty of gently rolling hills and mature trees. Designed by distinguished golf course architect Robert Muir Graves, this public 18-hole regulation golf course features many obstacles to make an interesting game for all levels of players. It is approximately a half-hour drive (without traffic) from either Oakland or San Francisco.

Players of all levels can play here and depending on the time of year, it can get good gusts of wind or be very still and hot. The length of the course can easily make a full round go to 5 hours.

The parking lot is pretty far from the clubhouse and the location close to the freeway could set your car up for a break in. Keep everything out of sight so that there is nothing tempting enough to break glass.

The burger at the turn is said to be one of the best course hamburgers around, being compared to In-n-Out.

I had a lot of fun on this course. There is a lot of variey on the holes; long ones for bombing it, tight tree lined fairways, doglegs, wide open fairways, nasty gullys, and tricky elevations on the greens. I wouldn't call the front nine walkable unless you're in pretty good shape.
If your tee shot heads for the hills surrounding the fairways, keep an eye on it becuase a lot of times you get a healthy bounce and roll back on to the playable area.
My only complaint is that every hole has a lip of grass around the cup. I think a greenskeeper could avoid it, if he tried. At any rate, you got to get the speed right; too fast and your ball jumps the hole, too slow and it gets hung up on the lip.

Nice flat course, very walkable. I only got to play the back nine. Difficulty rating is high because of trees and tight off the tee box on a few holes. Course has a bunch doglegs right and if you miss the fairway, you end up in a gully or lost to the wildlife.
Bunkers galore on a few holes, I didn't like these bunkers because they are not sand, they are a hard dirt raked nice & neat.
I golfed early in the morning, first few groups off the back 9, so it was a nice cool morning.
Beware! Putting surface is very bumpy, they need to roll them more flat, this was my main bitch.
Oh and the breaks don't break when they should break so putt "with authority"
I will try to return and play the front nine next..
